Below you will find some thoughts about how the journal might function differently. Think of it as a call for submissions in the guise of informal notes.

As an example of how one might use the journal’s form differently, please find a supplement to this email at www.realpoetik.org (our original handwritten notes on that subject, straight from our brains, taken in the car between Boston and Harpswell, Maine).

Thanks for supporting RealPoetik!

Yours,

Lily and Claire

CB:
I’ve become overwhelmed and unimpressed by email. I want email to be better. I want to talk to it or have my brain to respond, so my fingers don’t have to. Often I respond in my head but never send the email (Sorry).

Lots of services let us communicate instantaneously and for free without the “formalities” of an email, but email continues to be super useful and pretty necessary to interact and function in the U.S. Having constant access to one’s email changes my relationship to it further. When I want to be distracted, notice I have an email, and see it’s just a fare sale from American Airlines, I feel sad. Maybe you feel sad when RealPoetik comes and it’s just RealPoetik again.

Lately we published a couple of poems that had tricky formatting, and we were able to publish the poems as images, not text. Our internet assistant, Jenny Wickens, suggested we use a Google Labs feature that allows the image to be part of the email, not merely attached. I think more images should be a part of RP.

LB:
Like Claire, I sometimes feel ambivalent about my relationship to email, social networking, poetry on the internet, etc. I worry that there’s so much poetry online, I don’t read it carefully when I do decide to read it. Maybe I bring what tends to be a distracted attention to the internet to the poems I read online.

We’d like to explore our questions about the web and email as ways of disseminating and enjoying poetry by using the form of the journal differently for the next several months. Perhaps by using the listserv and website in new ways, we can rethink and revise some of our ideas about reading and viewing poetry online.

What would you like to see in your weekly email from RealPoetik? Do you have a piece that takes the form of the journal into account in a different way? Is there a video or image that you would like to see accompanying your poem on the RealPoetik website? Did you write a poem in response to a work of art you saw, an article you read, a trip you took, something your dog did?

Perhaps there is some way to present a poem alongside its point of origin (no matter how much the poem and this point diverged along the way) that might be productive or thought-provoking, and that might take the writing process into account. I tend to be obsessed with process, and it might be interesting for future RealPoetik emails/postings to present process in various ways.

You might even send an image of a hand-written draft of your poem, and that could accompany your poem somehow (this would be sort of like what the print journal LUNGFULL! does), and what we’ve posted on the website as a corollary to this email). There are probably lots of ideas we haven’t thought of, and we’re open to submissions of work that would use the journal’s form in new ways.

CB:
Maybe instead of a poem, your RP contribution would be an email introduction to a video you made that we then post on the website. Maybe it’s a photo email that links to a poem on the website. Maybe it would be exciting to be an email subscriber to RP and get something special that is not on the website (I don’t want us to be the company that makes you sign up to get special coupons then bothers you with emails that aren’t coupons; we are promising no coupons).

If one day you opened your RP email and it was way more awesome than most email in some way, if it somehow helped make email better, that would be nice.

Submissions

Update Re: Submissions

Please query first at realpoetikblog@gmail.com if you'd like to submit to the journal.

And please write to us at realpoetikblog@gmail.com to subscribe to the journal.

Introducing new editors: Lily Brown & Claire Becker!

Dear readers,

Happy summer. I'd like to share some news with you: I'm delighted to announce that two new editors, the wonderful poets Lily Brown & Claire Becker, yes: Claire Becker & Lily Brown, will now conduct your weekly encounters with RealPoetik. It's been an honor sending poems your way for three years (some of them yours!), & reading your comments and submissions. I send hugs and take a bow. I hope you'll keep in touch: write to me at anabobo@gmail.com, visit me at www.nightcommute.org, and look for my book due out from Tarpaulin Sky Press in the fall. I'll be reading on with you, so let's see what Lily & Claire have in store for us:

[exit Ana Bozicevic]
[enter Lily Brown & Claire Becker]:

We're excited to be taking over editorial duties at RealPoetik and look forward to building on the work Ana and previous editors have done. The poems published as emails in RealPoetik are able to go virtually anywhere. They can be read on your phone on the train, aloud to your dog, or on a braille display; they can be printed out and scribbled on, deleted, or replied to. Through email and the RealPoetik blog, we will bring you poems straight from the physical world, where real-live poetry communities won’t be superseded anytime soon. We're dedicated to publishing poems that are engaging, challenging, and aesthetically diverse. We look forward to this new endeavor and would love to hear from you at any time!

Lily & Claire

About the Editors:

Lily Brown holds an MFA from Saint Mary's College of California. Sal passed away yesterday. Please leave your notes for Sal's family in the comment field. And we'll give the last word to Sal.

Your interim editor,

Ana

Dear Friends of Sal Salasin,

I'm writing to let you all know that my uncle Robert, otherwise known as Sal and Roberto and Uncle Bob, passed away this evening. He was the fighting spirit that you all knew and loved until close to the end, not willing to give in to death unless there were good writers involved.

It was Shakespeare that carried him over. At one point in the afternoon Sal asked when Shakespeare would be arriving. I held his hand and said that Shakespeare was on his way. He asked if Shakespeare would be taking him upstairs. I said that yes, Shakespeare was coming to take him upstairs, and once there they’d meet up with Neruda and Cervantes and Lorca, and they’d talk about poetry together. I told him there were lots of un-unionized workers that needed to be organized, and lots of poets waiting for him in heaven, and that Shakespeare would be arriving very soon to guide him there. Sal began repeating, “Shakespeare is coming... Shakespeare is coming. He’s coming soon...” His body untensed, and he fell into a quiet sleep. I sat with him for awhile, holding my hand over his heart, whispering that Shakespeare would be there before too long, that we all love him, but that he was free to go.

It was the most peaceful sleep I’d seen in days, so I left him in the care of his continuous-care nurse, an incredibly gentle & perceptive Pakistani man named Erfan. Before I returned Sal’s spirit was gone. He had woken up briefly, and Erfan held him as his took his last breaths. Shakespeare arrived to escort him upstairs.

Sal requested that his ashes be scattered off of the Staten Island Ferry. I will be in touch when arrangements are made for this to happen. However, in the mean time please know that I read each and every one of the messages and poems that were sent to him by all of you. Even in his final days they never failed to make him smile, and he was truly amazed every time I'd bring in a new pile. I believe they brought a measure of completion to his life that might not otherwise have been possible. Thank you.

With love,
Elisa Salasin
(and the rest of our family)

And am pleased to inhabit the earth with this species. Goodbye and God bless you all. More of the evil work of Denise and her evil twin Denise, bleeding through my dreams. Man is the only animal that builds jails. He can also eat peanuts and chew tobacco. Let's go back to the phones where we'll discuss idempotent transactions in just a moment. Well, yes, I'm sorry I did the best I could which was obviously inadequate.

Fate and too many painkillers.

Recently I had the pleasure of driving alone in an American car on American roads listening to American radio from Perth Amboy to Seattle. And this had its rewards although it didn't do the planet any good.

And if it makes you feel any better, I didn't use my tongue. I'm also extremely good at removing the lint after each use and believe I should get some credit for that. "By the light of a thousand suns, I am become death." I'd sympathize but all in all, I'd rather talk about me. Just get my butt back safe from the K-Mart and I'm yours forever.

Sal Salasin, July 24, 1995

RealPoetik Reading at Bowery Poetry Club!!!!!

A short note to remind you that Sal Salasin (Executive Editor), Mike Topp (former Managing Editor) and Hal Sirowitz (frequent contributor) will be reading at

THE BOWERY POETRY CLUB
308 BOWERY
NEW YORK CITY 10012
SUNDAY JANUARY 27TH 4-6 PM
212.614.0505
betw. It was difficult to decide! Really!! All the pieces seemed pretty good and/or funny to me and ultimately, my choice was relatively arbitrary. Not that one’s choice of any lit over another isn’t ultimately arbitrary of course.

I note all the entries, visible on the blog (http://realpoetikblog.blogspot.com/) by the way, were real heavy in their applications of registered trade marks and pop culture icons. I have no idea why Paris Hilton should be so universally associated with marketing and schlock culture, but there you have it. The other interesting thing was an apparent inability of RealPoetikers to distinguish between Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears. And, uh, Nicole Richie. I am so sure they are different people!! Although I couldn’t for the life of me tell you how to tell. Still……

But I had to chose one and so I chose Sam Starkweather’s, probably because it used the verb “tivoed” and the proper name “Beyonce.” I shall name my first daughter, Beyonce, I swear. AND he took the time and trouble to trick it all out with John Berryman’s name (dragged John Berryman’s name through the mud, some would say) and some such bullshit as “transcontemporation as a process” which I thought was way cool. OK. Here it is:

Sonnet # 114

—a transcontemporation of John Berryman

You cum Paris Hilton-haired through the J. Lo air
bangin' on my split-level mobile-home screen-window
and you be cummin' for like ever, up, down
straight true through my reality show where
I'm pittin'-out like an unused desktop icon: wazz up,—
you be da body of the email, my micro-chip's on da fritz
so I found when grandma got 86'ed, dial-up speed
and I took Jet Blue down dirty South to da cremation

jumping with in-laws, Beyonce ring-tone revealed her last
text-message, icon still on screen, much less replied: Lewinskied
spin-doctored me so effectively I turned off the TV & cringed
in my entertainment center for all the re-runs
I never TiVoed and never again dazzle coworkers at water coolers,
a bitch to your beautiful ability to obsessively compulse.

Pics from the RealPo reading on October 4!

front: Niels Hav, Tao Lin, Carol Peters, Sharon Dolin
back: Elisa Gabbert, Sam Starkweather

Thank you Wonderful Readers & More Entries in the Paris Hilton Poem Contest

Lots of new entries in the Best Paris Hilton Poem contest. Two from Gil Childers (who is Gil Childers?) entitled, respectively, “Britney, Your Hair” and “Britney, Your Vagina,” which raises the very interesting point (well, interesting to me, anyway) that most folks don’t seem to be able to tell the difference between Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears. Or perhaps they just don’t care? I know I can’t (tell the difference) and I don’t (care). Anyway, here are Gil’s:

Britney, your head.

Hair is our enemy.
The axis of evil? Hair, hair,
and hair. It tried to
take over our vaginas,
Britney, but you defeated it.
It tried to take over
our heads, Britney, but you
prevailed. I wonder if
it isn't growing on your babies.
I wonder if you wonder.
I wonder if you look at Lindsay,
at Paris, and are horrified.
Their colonized heads.
They are mere husks. We
are mere husks, the hair crawling
from body to body as it
outgrows us. Go back to that
salon, Britney. The hair
won't be there, scattered on the
floor. It got hungry.

Britney, your vagina.

The umbrella of its
blondeness protects us.
Makes us a different
country. Desertless.
There is no wilderness
inside Paris’ ride; we
are with your babies.
We are behind every
camera you see. We
are not at war. We know
where we are. Lostness
has been lost—we
are where the panties
used to be.

And we are also blessed with this one from “anonymous” (who’s anonymous?) who may or may not also go by the nome de plume, Evil Eve:

Paris Hilton waits for you
in shadow of Le Tour Eiffel
wanting to wrap you in the soft luxury of
all-american-sheets-n-towels-all-made-in-china

Paris Hilton wants to share
her 2bacon2eggssssunnysideup
2pancakes so thick I dare you to fold 'em
like one of those thingies on the street with you, only you

Paris Hilton never saw no stinking
bed-in by no skinny brit/hairy jap. oh no.
she's ready with chemical lavender air freshener
for only 250 euros a nite

Which I think is MORE than enough for now, don’t you? I look forward to more of your obsessional writings, but not today.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://realpoetikblog.blogspot.com/2007/08/these-are-so-hot-more-entries-in-paris.html' title='These Are So Hot!! Yet, this burst of poetik enthusiasm:

Solitary Paris
Once he shook the light
and without hair
I would’ve turned up
mad. He is a nothing
more than a moose
that moves across
the floor, the ceiling—
a terrible animal. Sometimes
he shakes the mirror free
and here I hear mirrors
can be made from door
knobs or a fingernail
driven deep, solid,
stuck with dumb blonde.
But who else would have
the pigtails, the brains
to pull them beneath
the Sonic milkshake
costume, shouting Hot
Salty Anal Wieners
For Free while every
inmate hushed escape.

Paris Hilton Poems!!!

It's so hard to keep up with the news!! Which is more important, the criminal indictments being prepared against, well, gee, almost everyone in the Bush administration, or the fact that Paris is going to be doing Real Life for real? Difficult to keep up with the entries in The Best Paris Hilton Poem, but we manage. It's bringing a nice class of scaborousness to the magazine.

Anonymous was first up with this offering........

Paris, quoth the hair-maven, Never-more!
There are ways and there are ways
to undo the black locket
around your ankle
that says something
about levels. Paris,

hairdressers in jail are crying. You've taken
away their bleached and dry
unnatural reason for being.

Elisa Gabbert and Kathleen Rooney seem to have formed some kinda tag team for this, and inspired by the subject matter are churning this stuff out like sausage. Here are three so far, and I hope you feel properly discouraged when you realize you haven't gotten your first off yet.

WHAT HAVE I DONE?

A buffer of two pixels & a packet of pills
is not enough buffer. Please don't make public

my spectacular longing for an intellectual
sex tape. If I can eroticize prison rape,

I can be truly cracktacular. Cybernetic
mechanisms like predictive text messaging

say I'm an argument for retroactive birth control,
but the best thing about the morning after

is laughter in the recording studio & a new
set of teeth, all thirtysomething, all solid gold.

and

WHAT AM I FOR?

Grief for one's dead human-
ity is one thing but it takes balls
to wear gingham to a funeral. My past's
as checkered as Chex Mix. I like
a good word but I hate to define it—
socialite schmocialite, sashay
schmashay. There's no subtext, OK?
So I texted "Cathy" instead of "Kathy."
Everyone knows spelling is arbitrary.
Mom thinks I'm dumb, but I've got
a long memory. I got reprimanded on
the field trip to the petting zoo, as if
I need permission to use expletives!
& fucking emoticons! :( I'm both
tickled pink & basically afraid of that
funky tic in her upper lip. How late
is the marshmallow store open? Are we
having peeps to party w/ tonight?
There's something unheimlich about
the back of her I'LL FUCK ANY
BUNNY T-shirt. I don't think
I asked Santa for a rabbit b/c I
wanted someone to nibble my ass!
Mega duh: Memory is a game of
matching: you have to put crazy
on crazy. AFAIK, Mom isn't even
named after a geographic region
& she called me out, which is
like the ultimate role reversal
if you think about it.

aaaaannnnnd

WHY AM I FAMOUS?

A comforting solution by the bright light of day
would be more comforting in the shade. It's hot

on the beach, but I don't wake up w/ bikini lines—
I fell asleep under a schlocky script, set in a hotel

set in some woods set in a rocky hillside
& my only real line was, "I'm all set!" The hot

girl always gets whacked. There's no take-backs
once you've tried so hard to be a celebutard. Hotel-

ier has never been the way I wanted to make my
way into America's asses, but when you're hot

you get free passes, you pass "Go" & collect
affection. You check yourself into a complex hotel.

And Sam Starkweather says this "isn't exactly about Paris" but that "you can sort of see the roots of the transcontemporation as a process" so I guess it's alright.

The RealPoetik Blog! Sal Salasin Blogs!!

Oh! The RealPoetik Blog! I feel just like Ariana Huffington! Dahlings! I'm so glad to see you here!

So, the POINT of this is to get your INTERESTING and LIVELY comments. Which is why we have a "comments" button so you can post your deepest, darkest and most bitter secrets. Although actually, we're kinda hoping for comments, inquiries, dissertations, rants and querulous ness in regard to:

A. Specific works posted in mailing list and blog.
B. RealPoetik generally.
C. Arts, letters and politics

D. Other errant rants and ramblings typical of los clientes que hay aqui. If you get my drift.

Now, needless to say, I'm not gonna post any old crap. Well, actually, I WILL post any old crap, but probably not yours. Send a photo first. Otherwise, I edit the stuff although with an open hand (is that right?) and a view to promoting discussion.

I will begin. Suggested topics. How come more stuff, in RealPoetik as well as elsewhere for god's sake, isn't funny. I'll spare you my argument that all GREAT art has always been funny (Rabelais, Joyce, Pound, Ginsberg, Pynchon, de Sade, Twain, Melville) although I point out we are living in an era of very high political and economic comedy. Environmental comedy even, since we are in the process of frying ourselves to death. We are revealed as a species of fruit mold. Yeast, poisoning itself in its own shit.

But I digress. Funny, boys and girls, is only possible through an extension of truth, a learning process. Funny is the enemy of the academy. Funny is the enemy of all lies.

AND it seems to me, this is an avenue to approach the political questions of the day. I mean, I find Dick Cheney hilarious, and although I doubt he'll live long enough to inhabit the cell in Spandau Prison I think he so richly deserves (bad heart, you know), still….

Here's another one. How about a Contest, boys and girls? How about, for the moment, Best Poem on the Subject of Paris Hilton? Prize to be publication in both the blog AND the extensive mailing list!!! And since I just happen to have a really great poem on the subject of Paris Hilton, just as an example, mind:

Paris Hilton is Free! And
it rained a little in Guadalajara overnight
with all the usual sturm und drang
and thunder over mexico like it does. My love life,
not so much, but
Paris Hilton is Free!!
and better times are bound to come.
Paris, if you're out there…
(International Hand Gesture for) Call Me!
I love your movies!

Think "Dick Cheney Dick Cheney Dick Cheney."
Now think "PARIS HILTON IS FREE PARIS HILTON IS FREE PARIS HILTON IS FREE!"
See? type='text'>About and Masthead

RealPoetik is the oldest and most active little magazine on the internet. Since '96, we've featured one poet weekly; the poems are sent via e-mail to our 1300+ subscribers and published online. Our blog and listserv formats serve to place poems in a transparent, ephemeral context to be read alongside the texts of daily life. Forward them on.

Editors
Lily Brown
Claire Becker

HTML Crisis Response
Jenny Wickens

Past Editors
Ana Bozicevic
Caroline Conway
Lars Palm
Kirby Olson
Mike Topp
Sal Salasin, Founder and Managing Editor, RIP 2009
